I think it was the first US number 1 by a British artist Anne.

Some people put Vera Lynn and Auf Wiedersehen Pet as the first, but that was before the official Billboard Top 100 that Acker Bilk would've been counted on. It broke all kinds of records and it was brought to the moon in 1969...

Funny enough Anne I had seen some controversy before whether Acker Bilk was the first but I honestly didn’t think that Vera Lynn was the other artist. The plot thickens !

And upon further investigation it does appear to be Vera Lynn. Confused.com
