Well the 60s and 80s tonight are instantly recognisable.

70s though took a bit of detective work. Had to play right to the end and picked out 1 artist. I knew that the 2 selections listed weren't the answer so I selected another artist and thankfully 1 of their tracks I was unfamiliar with and luckily that was the answer.😉

Goodnight/morning everybody!

Should have got the 70s faster but the keyboard chord sequence wasn’t that familiar to me. The beat was. And the oohs that were a bit of a nod to Donna Summer’s Love To Love You Baby. The song was another example of longevity artists reinventing themselves with disco grooves and having huge hits. Bee Gees may be the most prime example. Abba moved away from glam rock Waterloo to disco with Dancing Queen and numerous other hits with memorable disco beats with perfect, human drum machine precision. Dancing Queen was inspired by George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby – also John Lennon’s Whatever Gets You Through The Night but that’s more chords than beat. Rock Your Baby didn’t have a human drum machine. It was one of the first major hits featuring an actual drum machine.

Blondie allegedly upset their purist fan base by shifting from punk to power pop with four to the floor disco beats and groovy open hats working the off beats. Atomic was arguably the pinnacle of this approach. Blondie weren’t reliant on this and it wasn’t necessarily a formula. Dreaming, described by Chris Stein as “pretty much a cop of Dancing Queen”, has a roll forever, non-disco drumbeat that worked brilliantly in a Suspicious Minds live way. It was a recording fluke as Clem Burke did his warmup drumming by belting as many drums as possible and the producer Mike Chapman kept it in the final mix. Sometimes songwriters had tracks which never fully hit home until reworked as disco to have monster hits. Harry Vanda and George Young – brother of Angus AC/DC – took this approach with Love Is In The Air which was a hit for John Paul Young.

Back to punk, disco and today’s 70s track:

“The song was featured in BBC2’s 1995 punk documentary Arena: Punk and the Pistols. Back in 1976, the song had been a favourite of early UK punks such as the Bromley Contingent and Jordan who would dance to the song at Soho-based lesbian nightclub Louise’s, where it was the house anthem.[3]

Bit of an essay. Should convert it into a blog or something.

Well I wasn't familiar with the 70s track at all Major. I initially selected the other artist you mentioned above for the obvious reasons.

You are a wealth of knowledge btw ! 😉

As always, a lot of that was news to me. I had a theory and researched it. That journey was then posted. There’s never any real point in writing stuff you already know. For me, to get something out of it, it has to be about questions and discovery. Learning about new things is the name of the game. I love the how and why of things, especially when it comes to creativity, influences and competition. Five things from the piece above were news to me. I think they stand out in the text in an ooh kinda way.

Drum machine hit, John Lennon Rock Your Baby, Chris Stein Dancing Queen, Angus Young brother and the entire last quote.

Speaking of the last quote I must post something I discovered about Louise’s.

Club Louise: 1970s. 61 Poland Street, Soho.

But where are all the lesbians? Well, it’s a good question. We know that as early as 1887 there was a club in London called La Cauchoise.

And the 1930s saw the opening of The Gateways off Chelsea’s Kings Road, which became the longest running lesbian nightclub of the 20th century. Which is pretty epic.

But what about lesbians in Soho? There’s a remarkable quietness which may be more to do with a lack of documentation rather than existence. Time will tell. But for now we know that one of the first lesbian clubs in Soho started here in 1973, behind a red painted door.

The manager was Madame Louise, a chic, older French woman in a black dress and diamond jewellery, grey waved hair, heavy eyeliner and a grey fur coat if the weather was cold. Not everyone was allowed in.

’Are you members?’ she would lisp, and if she liked the look of you, ‘Ah, you must become members.’

Down the stairs was a small dance floor surrounded by low tables and mirrors on the walls. In 1976 the club became an early punk hangout as it was one of the few places where punks could go without being hassled. The so-called Bromley Contingent were regulars, including Siouxsie Sioux, members of The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Slits.

Got the 60's and 80's straight away - whoop whoop 😂 But the 70's was totally new to me - great tune though 😍

Not a great night for me . Yes I got the 80s 1 immediately.

60s I had to skip til the first vocals.

But 70s I am ashamed to say I didn't get. I was familiar with the intro alright but just couldn't get there. Maybe 5am is too early for my memory cells.🤔

Margaret is helping a friend with some kind of an emergency. Now I’m not saying it can’t be that much of an emergency if she’s doing Heardle on the sly and sending me links but

Anyway, Major Mags just said to say it wasn’t her finest hour. Not sure if that meant the score or skiving off to try them in the first place 🤣

Ooh if I open the links I’ll know the answers. I’ll clear the browser after posting this and be a good girl 😇

Got the 60's the fastest but had to wait for the vocals. 70's didn't know it till the last possible second when the guitar changed. 80's drove me mad, I knew I knew it but had to keep replaying it to figure it out 😅

Thanks for covering for me Lois. Probably shouldn't have been doing Heardle but I'm a stickler for tradition. 😜

Can't believe you didn't get the 70s Major? Think you'd normally get it. The giveaway chord, even if you were unusually stuck was at the end but then it was 5AM so maybe you missed it?

Goodnight Privates. 😘

Well slightly better today. I got both the 60 and 80s immediately.

70s I never heard of the song or the artist but after skipping til the end I typed in part of the lyrics and the correct answer came up so I am becoming quite the selective detective!😉
