RIP OTD 1996, British actor Jon Pertwee died (aged 76). His most famous roles were as the 3rd Doctor in the BBC TV series, Doctor Who (1970-1974), and the title character in the ITV series, Worzel Gummidge, from 1979 to 1981: he later reprised the role from 1987 to 1989.

RIP OTD 2000, John Gielgud died (aged 96). He’s regarded as one of the best stage actors of the 20th century. He went on to have a successful film career. He won the Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor by playing the acid-tongued Hobson in Arthur, alongside Dudley Moore.

OTD 1976 Cillian Murphy was born in Cork, Ireland. He’s best known for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer for which he won the Academy Award as Best Actor. His best known TV role was as Thomas Shelby in the BBC TV series, Peaky Blinders.

OTD 1977 Star Wars was released in the USA. It was the 1st instalment of the original Star Wars trilogy. It grossed 775 million dollars (worth 7.8 billion now), surpassing Jaws (1975), to become the highest-grossing film ever at the time, until the release of ET in 1982.

OTD 1983 Return of the Jedi, (also known as Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi), was released in the USA. It was the 3rd instalment in the original Star Wars trilogy. Its plot takes place one year after The Empire Strikes Back.
