27 September 1979. Gracie Fields died (aged 81). She was the most popular British female singer in the 1930s. She was granted the Freedom of Rochdale, her home town, where a local theatre is named after her. In 2016, a statue of Fields was unveiled outside Rochdale Town Hall.
