PS Thanks for the heads up, Major, with “a certain musical instrument” that gets on some of our

You took one for the team and helped shield us from the shock of the sound.

Lois / s*x allergic folk can hear the riff on that instrument once and think: We don’t need to play it again. No more skips. And now

And to think they could’ve played the melody on a trumpet. Mmm trumpet...

Well I almost did skip the 80s track but just got the very start of the instrument in question and I mean the slightest wee bit. Knew the band had that song ok but don't remember it being number 1 unlike another of their songs.

60's I needed the singing. 70's no skips. 80's I know the band but can't say I've heard the song before. So, a bit of a mixed bag tonight 🤣

Thanks for the interesting reading on the 60's song, Margaret. I'm in the mmm trumpets and mmm trombones camp 😍

P.S. And before anyone thinks I'm an anti-saxophone fascist, I don't mind it in Madness tunes. I think that's because it's always kinda tongue-in-cheek. Plus there are two trumpets as well. Did I mention I like brass instruments? Woodwind not so much. Fuck flutes. Sorry, we seem to have wandered back into music fascist territory. I'm going to say goodnight now. And the fife. Right that's it, bedtime 🤣

Goodnight everyone 🤗

The choice is yours Lois but seeing as you're feeling generous you could always buy me a Mercedes Benz.

But I'll settle for a night on the town !😉

Not a great night tonight. Maybe I should have went to bed and dream about luxury German automobiles!

60s I had to skip right til the end when the singing starts. At that stage it's instantly recognisable.

70s I know the group ok but never heard that song before.

80s I used a couple of skips til the key change, then it was recognisable.

Out of my depth on these. 60s was the fastest but that took the guitar to become familiar. 70s was a bit of a scam on my part. On the last skip I thought there was a chance the vocals came from a group that were around from the 60s but had their biggest hit in 1974. Heardle offered just one song. I didn’t recognise the name and have no recollection of ever hearing the song. No marks on quiz night.

The 80s intro rang no bells for me other than I had a vague recollection the song was about to change into a whole different more upbeat genre. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen until after the skips so I totally failed on that. The song itself is really famous and was a big hit in 1986.

My theory on the discrepancy between the intro and the genre-hop change into the recognisable hit is that the 1986 intro remained too faithful to the 1980 original written by Nashville songwriter Ben Peters and sung by Mac Davis. Peters wrote a string of number 1s. Mac Davis is famous for It’s Hard To Be Humble but also wrote In The Ghetto and other hits for Elvis.

80s was a 1 hit wonder but I do remember it getting number 1 in the UK.

Fair play to you for guessing the 70s artist, never in a million years !🙄

60's I got there with a few skips, but the 70's and 80's I had no hope. Couldn't even play the system by lobbing in a lyric 😂

Looks like Heardle immediately found Troubled Water and took away the bridge. Feckers 🤣
