Good night

Well a mixed bag for me tonight. Got the 80s track immediately but used skips on the 70s and 80s. Really shoulda got the 80s straight away .☹

Kind of a triple repeat offender day. 60s and 70s suited my memory best.

The reality of my totally flawed 80s attempt is that, having listened to the full 30 second clip, I wouldn’t actually recognise the song until about 26 seconds in. That’s when the chorus melody riff is played. It’s a famous song and I remember the chorus well enough but not the intro.

I guessed the band but, having narrowed the options down to two I went wrong on a fifty-fifty.

Too late. Even after we posted all those drum machine intros to watch out for recently, the track just didn’t register with my brain or short-term memory.

I know.

Was it the 60s you got immediately Major? I would've backed you for the 70s too?  Come to think of it, all three? 🤗

Truthfully Margaret I'm not overly familiar with the 70s track although it was obvious after a skip or 2.

And yes it's the 60s 1 I got immediately and I really really should have got the 80s 1 immediately - what is it with you and 80s music ? Very distinctive intro which I deserve a kick up the hole for not getting immediately!🙄

Got all three straight away. 70s one is a favourite of mine from that artist.

Got the 60’s straight away 😍

70’s I needed one skip and for Paul to give me a bit of a hand 😂

80’s was a close call. Thank goodness for that low keyboard riff 🤗

I can’t really explain the 80s Major, but John Peel may have something to answer for. I listened to his show, as I felt alienated from the charts, to discover music that existed beyond the mainstream. Dave Fanning too. 120 minutes on MTV. Peel lost most of his audience overnight when he started playing punk music before anyone else. The Undertones lives were changed because of Peel. He cried when he heard another DJ finally playing them.

Peel also introduced me to the idea of learning from his show and learning to ignore his show. I’d listen to song after song and think, shite, shite, shite, shite, half-ok, shite, shite, shite, maybe, fuck me who’s that my life has changed. The ratio in the mainstream was similar or worse with no life changing discovery but either way I was introduced to searching for myself. Nobody is ever an absolute arbiter of good taste. He thought Bruce Springsteen’s music was dreadful.

Peel wouldn’t play Dancing Queen but The Undertones did, Elvis Costello did, The Sex Pistols did and Blondie and that’s how the best music evolved. This evolution was mainstream standard in the 70s but moved to indie in the 80s.

And that’s one of my guesses at my 80s, my childhood and how I missed some things and found others. The other guesses related to 60s and 70s records found at home that influenced what I ended up liking later in the 80s and onwards. When our brains hear new music they check the melody patterns against what we’ve liked before and tell us to switch off or keep going but that’s a whole other story.

Well I do think Major Margaret will get the 80s 1 today ok along with the other 2 possibly but I'm afraid 80s was my only 1.

60s is a well known artist but I'd only be familiar with 1 or 2 tracks.

70s I hadn't a clue. The artist's name is familiar but I can't remember why.

You say you are familiar with some of the 60s and 70s tracks from listening to records from that era. It was probably the mid 70s before we even had a record player in our house so it might explain my ignorance. And anyone that had a record player or 4 track stereo round here usually had Big Tom or Charlie Pride or Philomena Begley !🙄

60s and 80s suited my memory best. Fans of Dirty Dancing are likely to know the 60s song. They’re pretty hardcore. I can’t claim to be one of them.

I’ll think about it.

The song may be more known now than in the 60s, having featured in so many shows in the last few years.

I don’t remember ever hearing the 70s song. I had a guess at the artist when the singing finally appeared at the last second. Heardle only offered one song. Scam. 2/3 in reality.

Well I've given you a 👍🏻 for your videos Margaret but in all honesty these were the kinda artists I was trying to escape from my childhood and I haven't actually played them !😉

60s not a clue.

70s - know the artist but didn't recognise the tune - Hey Barney, don't ask me questions I can't answer

80s - needed a couple of skips to be sure of the song title - artist very well known from that period.
