2 October 1943. Anna Ford was born in Tewksbury. On 9 March 1978, she became ITN’s 1st national female newsreader when she presented ITN’s News at One programme. She was not the 1st ITV newsreader. That honour was gained by Barbara Mandell in 1955.

5 October 1962. Dr No, the first James Bond film, with Sean Connery in the leading role, was released. It was based on the 1958 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. The film was the 5th most popular film at the UK box office in 1962, but it was not successful in the USA.
