OTD 1897, Dracula, the Gothic novel by the Irish author, Bram Stoker, was published. The novel tells the story of Count Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread the undead curse. This is opposed by Abraham Van Helsing.

RIP OTD 1996, Psychedelic guru Timothy Leary died (aged 75). He thought the drug LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide), had potential for therapeutic use in psychiatry. He used LSD himself and felt it helped mind expansion. He popularised the catchphrase “turn on, tune in, drop out”.
