18 January 1879. Boy’s Own Paper was published for the 1st time. Editor was Samuel Beeton, husband of cookery writer, Mrs. Beeton. It was aimed at young boys and was published until 1967. The contents included adventure stories, notes on sports and games, puzzles and much else.

20 January 1568. Miles Coverdale died (aged 80). He produced the 1st complete printed English translation of the Bible. He was an early Puritan, affiliated to the radical Protestant reformer, John Calvin, but he still advocated the teachings of the Catholic, Augustine.
