19 July 1545. Mary Rose, the pride of Henry VIII’s battle fleet, sank during the Battle of the Solent, against the French fleet. Of the 500 men on board, no more than 35 survived. 19 July 1900. The first line of the Paris underground Métro, Porte Maillot to Porte de Vincennes, opened during the Paris 1900 World’s Fair.
