This day 338 years ago – 8 June 1681 – Oliver Plunkett went on trial in Westminster after being named in the ‘Popish Plot,’ a conspiracy theory claiming Catholics wished to have King Charles II assassinated.

This day 103 years ago - 8 June 1917 - an explosion in a copper mine in Butte, Montana, resulted in the death of 166 people. 19 of them were from Ireland, by far the largest group of foreign-born workers.
