31 May 1884. Dr John Harvey Kellogg patented “flaked cereal”. It later became known as “Corn Flakes”. Kellogg hoped the cereal would reduce indigestion and discourage masturbation, but why he thought a bowl of cornflakes could do this remains unclear. pic.twitter.com/6qVQmJazLk

31 May 1961. Jimi Hendrix joined the US Army. After being arrested for car theft, he had to choose between prison or joining the Army. He chose the latter, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, based in Kentucky. On 29 June 1962, he was granted a medical discharge. pic.twitter.com/8sIUkdnrD9

31 May 1996. Psychedelic guru, Timothy Leary, died (aged 75). He thought the drug LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) had potential for therapeutic use in psychiatry.
