1 December 1997. Jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli died (aged 89). He’s best known as a founder of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, with the brilliant guitarist, Django Reinhardt, in 1934. Grappelli has also been called "the grandfather of jazz violinists".
