23 October 1950. Al Jolson died (aged 64). In the inter-war years he was known as “the world’s greatest entertainer”. His performing style, using black face make up, which perpetuated racial stereotypes, is now indefensible, though Jolson himself supported racial equality.

23 October 2014. Glam rock star Alvin Stardust died (aged 72). He previously used the stage name Shane Fenton, and had 4 UK top 40 hits in the early 1960s. He was far more successful as Stardust having a number of hits in the 1970s including the No 1 hit Jealous Mind.
