The @hpscireland has today been notified of 3,887* confirmed cases of #COVID19.

As of 8am today, 493 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 109 are in ICU.

I see that the UK has over 78 thousand new cases today. The previous daily record was 68 thousand in January.

They reckon this new strain is more infectious but not as severe symptoms so hopefully it won't mean a critical rise in hospital numbers and ICU numbers.

Maybe it might even create herd immunity? I'm not saying it will, just asking a question.

Sure we live in hope.🙏🏻🤞🏻

There has been a total of 5,835 deaths related to #COVID19 notified in Ireland. This includes 47 deaths newly notified in the past week (since last Wednesday).

Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous variant. I need to be very clear: vaccines alone will not get any country out of this crisis.
It’s not vaccines instead of masks, distancing, ventilation or hand hygiene.

Possible #Omicron cases can be identified by the number of PCR results with ‘S gene target failure.’ Using this methodology, we estimate that approximately 35% of reported cases are now due to the Omicron variant.

* Exception for weddings - midnight and 100 people
