The story goes that Kris Kristofferson delivered a demo of this song to Johnny Cash via helicopter. The helicopter part was true but the recording artist who first had faith in this song was Ray Stevens. Kristofferson was moved to tears—I’m guessing around the 1.40 mark—when he first heard it. The label never got behind it. Johnny Cash heard this version, went on to play it live on TV and the rest is history.

1 October 2014. Lynsey de Paul died suddenly (aged 66). She had chart hits in UK and Europe in the 1970s, starting with the UK top 10 single Sugar Me in 1972. She was the 1st British female to achieve a No 1 hit with a self-written song (in Belgium, Spain and The Netherlands).
